Guadalmedina Motorway

The AP-46, known as the Guadalmedina highway, is a 28 kilometer highway that serves as a connection road between the interior of the province and the coast. The main purpose of building this motorway was to help users navigate with greater safety and comfort the unwelcoming terrain of the Sierra de Malaga, which features an abrupt tilt of nearly 900 meters. It includes 26 viaducts, 3 double tunnels, a service area in each direction, a 14-lane toll area and the best safety equipment.  

Recently, Sacyr has put two new interchanges into operation, between the MA-20 and A-7 highways, which improve connections with the AP-46 Malaga-Las Pedrizas highway. With an investment of 24 million euros, the new interchanges will reduce travel times between Malaga, its metropolitan area, the Costa del Sol, and the Guadalhorce Valley. 

This road has also been the testing area where we developed our innovative illumination system for tunnels: IOHNIC. This solution, later used in other of our assets, consists of locating the luminaires in a continuous way, which provides better comfort and security for the roads’ users. Moreover, the system is designed to optimize the energy consumption and guarantee greater respect for the environment.
