Phase

Operation

Formentera SWRO Desalination Plant

With a capacity of 7,000m3/day, the seawater desalination plant in Formentera has been upgraded in 2016 and 2018 expanding its total capacity from 4,000m3/day (phase I) to 7,000m3/day (phase II).

Apart from expanding its treatment capacity, the plant upgraded the desalination process, including cutting-edge and sustainable technologies resulting in a reduction of the energy consumption and a better quality of the water. It is worth to mention the introduction of more efficient osmosis membranes that feed an energy recovery process by isobaric chambers or the substitution of the Pelton turbines for a system of energy recovery with isobaric chambers.

The water treatment process includes:

  • Pressure filter pre-treatment
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Energy recovery with isobaric chambers
  • Remineralization with calcite bed
